Bryan Schaeffer is at it again with his second book of The Last Best series. He came out with The Last Best Ski Montana in the fall of 2020 and didn’t hesitate long before starting a new project. In his latest, The Last Best Bike Montana (SINTR, $30) Schaeffer dives into all things mountain biking, continuing his innovative approach to publishing.
While this handbook provides detailed route descriptions for over 20 trails, The Last Best Bike Montana is not just a guidebook—though it is a great one at that. Schaeffer covers the gamut from tips and tricks before buying a bike, to finding tasty après after your ride. The hard copy is filled with colorful hand-drawn illustrations from the local artist and links to interviews with area experts. Links in a book, you ask? That’s right, embedded throughout its 110 pages are QR codes that provide access to videos, podcasts, and creative animations. Part knowledge, part advice, and part entertainment, this interactive work is exactly as advertised: a portal to mountain biking the greater Bozeman area.
